Traffic Stop Tactics Course

The City of Wetaskiwin is hosting a 3 day Traffic Stop Tactics Course December 8-10, 2017.

Traffic stops are essential to effective traffic law enforcement. The traffic stop continues to be at the forefront of law enforcement safety concerns. According to Statistics, over the last 10 years, 120 officers have been accidentally struck and killed in the line of duty while investigating crashes, assisting motorists, directing traffic, and enforcing local traffic laws.

This course is compiled from many Law Enforcement agencies across North America, including Calgary Police Service, IACP LESS Subcommittee’s 2004 Staff Study, Ohio State Highway Patrol, Chicago Police Department and the Arizona Department of Public Safety and evaluates the best practices and recommendations concerning Safe Traffic Stops.

Class time is comprised of both lecture and practical exercises in the following areas:

1. Legal Considerations
2. 3 Types of Traffic Stops with focus on Operational Traffic Stops
3. 10 stages of a Traffic Stop including Vehicle Placement, Officer approach and positioning
4. The 8-Step Tactical Traffic Communication Technique
5. Tinted Window Traffic Stops
6. Contact and Cover Principles
7. Cover and Concealment
8. Commercial Vehicle Tactics
9. Night Time Traffic Stop Tactics
10. Unconventional Traffic Stops
11. Single and 2 Officer Approaches

The course will begin with an evening session on Friday, December 8th and will start with a night session on Saturday December 9th to incorporate the practical Night Time Traffic Stop Tactics. Course time will be divided between classroom and practical outside exercises including Commercial Vehicle approaches and Increased Risk Traffic Stops.

The course cost is $600 plus gst per student, departments sending 2 or more students will receive a 20% discount.
