Our CPOs enjoy an excellent compensation package including a very competitive rate of pay. Our CPOs work 80 hrs/2 weeks.
Our CPOs work out of a dedicated, purpose built Peace Officer facility which includes heated vehicle shop, modern work stations, workout area, break room, changing/locker rooms and a secure public reception.
Our CPOs use modern patrol vehicles which are intentionally equipped with a focus on officer safety.
Our CPO program includes innovations such as a full time School Resource Officer program and providing a Rural Crime Prevention Officer to assist our residents, farmers, businesses and industry with ongoing rural property crime problems.
Our Level 1 Community Peace Officers are responsible for enforcing Provincial Statutes and municipal bylaws by conducting proactive patrols throughout the community and rural area. Our CPOs patrol 2600 kilometers of roads, secondary highways, and are also responsible for participating in the Rural Crime Prevention Program.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Conduct highly visible patrols within the M.D. of Bonnyville to prevent and detect Municipal Bylaw and select Provincial Statute violations. Includes traffic patrol, commercial vehicle enforcement and rural crime prevention duties.
- Conduct investigations involving violations, collect, and store evidence according to Provincial Court Regulations.
Draft and complete various types of charging documents including bylaw tickets, provincial offense notices, and provincial summons forms.
- Act on various situations such as traffic stops, complaint response, and interacting with the public to effectively articulate reasons for action taken.
- Accomplish checks of commercial vehicles, including gravel and oil haulers to ensure safe operation and compliance with commercial vehicle safety and overweight legislation.
- Conduct crime prevention patrols throughout the municipality to deter and detect crime. This may involve some extended working hours.
- Participate in the Vacant Home Check program and assist the Crime Prevention Officer as needed.
- Perform various related tasks during a municipal emergency or disaster situation which may involve working extended or abnormal hours.
- Prepare Prosecutor Information Sheets and court briefs for charges or tickets.
- Investigate complaint history and conduct routine clerical assignments.
- Respond to complaints from the public regarding Municipal Bylaws and Provincial Statutes.
- Ensure patrol bodycam and in-car video is appropriately tagged and downloaded.
- Operate in-car computer tablet to enter shift log entries, write reports, and conduct searches.
- Liaison with other local enforcement agencies.
- Host or attend public or industry meetings.
- Attend community functions and events as a representative of the department.
- Conduct traffic control for emergency situations, parades, funeral processions, and other activities as required.
- Maintain a high level of dress and deportment that will demonstrate a positive representation of the Public Safety department.
- Participate in a patrol vehicle Daily Inspection Program.
- Every employee shall, while on the job, take reasonable care to protect the health and welfare of themselves and other workers, and cooperate with the employer in protecting the health and safety of all employees and contractors present on the worksite, as stated in the OH & S Act.
- Perform other related duties as directed.
- Valid Class 5 Alberta Operator’s License (Subject to a driver license abstract check).
- Valid First Aid/CPR certificate.
- A minimum of three (3) years as a Police Officer, Provincial Peace Officer or Level 1 Community Peace Officer with traffic enforcement authority or equivalent.
- Qualified to operate traffic radar and portable axle scales, with experience conducting and enforcing traffic and commercial truck laws, including moving violations, and truck axle overweights.
- Grade 12 diploma supplemented by a two-year diploma in law enforcement, criminal justice or a related field. Equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience may be considered.
- Experience working with Alberta Provincial Statutes, including traffic enforcement with radar and laser, will be considered an asset.
- ASP baton, OC spray training within last 3 years.
- Completion of the Solicitor General’s Public Security Peace Officer training or equivalent.
- Completion of an approved Physical Ability Requirement Evaluation (PARE) test within the allotted time to qualify for a CPO1 Appointment.
- Clear criminal record check/Enhanced Reliability screening conducted by the police of jurisdiction (proof required at time of interview).
- Computer proficiency with MOVES, Microsoft Office and knowledge of reporting software, such as Report Exec.
- Strong public relations, time management, and interpersonal communication skills are required.
- Ability to deal effectively with complaint investigation, conflict resolution, and perform duties with minimal supervision.
- Qualification in Crime Prevention though Environmental Design would be preferred.
- Shift work may vary including extended hours, weekends, and holidays.
- Work is subject to extreme and varying weather conditions.
- Operate vehicles and other types of specialized equipment in emergency situations.
- May be subject to personal risk in physical confrontations, emergency or stressful situations.
- Must always wear assigned PPE while on duty.
- Physically demanding job tasks.
- Good hearing and eyesight are necessary to perform certain job requirements.
- PARE Police Physical Abilities test (during initial hiring process).
