Community Peace Officer Level 1 (Level 2 transitioning to Level 1)
Full Time – 30 hours/week. Rotational schedule. 4 on, 4 off until further notice (COVID based schedule)
Temp one-year term position covering a parental leave. Potential for extension to permanent FT.
Salary - $44,000/year with a comprehensive benefit package

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Animal Cruelty Investigations, CHS Peace Officers investigate cruelty and neglect complaints, inspect locations where animals are kept for sale, hire or exhibition, and responds to injured animal and emergency calls. Our Peace Officers performs their duties as determined by the Animal Protection Act of Alberta and the Criminal Code of Canada.

Duties:
• Investigate concerns of animal cruelty and neglect as reported and complete detailed reports
• Compile information and evidence necessary to pursue charges in cases of animal cruelty/neglect under the Animal Protection Act of Alberta and the Criminal Code of Canada
• Inspect locations where animals are kept for sale, hire or exhibition and completes inspection reports
• Access/enter information using computer system
• Operate communication devices in a professional manner
• Operate CHS vehicles and maintain cleanliness and servicing of the vehicle
• Interact with, and maintain good working relationships with related external agencies (e.g. CPS, RCMP, ASPCA, City Animal Services, Crown Prosecutors Office, Veterinarians, Fish and Wildlife) as well as members of the public
• Performs other duties within the department as directed by the Manager

Position Requirements:
• Post-secondary education (minimum 2 year diploma) in a related field required, extensive enforcement experience considered in lieu of post-secondary education
• Genuine concern for the welfare of animals
• Knowledge of animal cruelty legislation enforcement background is an asset
• Qualify for Peace Officer (CPO) Level 1 status
CPOIP is an asset
• Two or more years of related experience
• Exceptional public relations skills and professional, positive attitude
• Ability to assess situations and exercise good judgment
• Excellent conflict resolution and negotiation skills
• Good organizational and time management skills
• Ability to work with minimal supervision
• Valid operator’s license with a clean driving record
• Successful candidate will be required to provide a criminal record check at their own expense to be arranged by CHS

Physical Requirements:
• Physically capable of and comfortable working with, and handling a variety of species including but not limited to: cats, dogs, rabbits, birds, rodents, and reptiles
• Capable of lifting up to 50 lbs
