Canadians Invited to Honour Fallen Police and Peace Officers

Vancouver, BC – October 9, 2024: Honour the Fallen – Nos disparus launches today. This one-hour TV special showcases the annual Canadian Police and Peace Officers' Memorial on Parliament Hill in Ottawa.

The program was six years in the making. It includes personal stories told by families and colleagues of fallen officers across the country.

"Brave women and men gave their lives in service to our communities. This annual event is a solemn reminder," said Tom Stamatakis, President – Canadian Police Association. "Their sacrifice resonates deeply within us all, and this production, highlighting the ceremony, serves as a lasting tribute to their selflessness and heroism."

Darlene Forst is producer and director of the project. "It's a moving experience, seeing the pageantry of the event and hearing the emotional stories of those left behind. Canadians are very good at observing Remembrance Day. Yet, sacrifices are also made inside our borders, and we want to show respect and thanks without another officer funeral." She added, "During the time we worked on this production, 24 officers were killed in the line of duty."

"We must never forget those who have made the ultimate sacrifice," said Brian Sauvé, President and CEO – National Police Federation. "As police officers, we know the pain of losing a loved one never truly goes away. We hope you will take a moment to pause, reflect, and thank those who gave their all for us."

The program streams free online at honourthefallen.ca for English, and nosdisparus.ca for French. Broadcast has been confirmed in the USA on WPBS New York. Air Canada will include the program in both languages in their in-flight entertainment service starting later this fall.

"All Canadians should recognize the immense sacrifices made by these officers," said Éric Lauzon, Director – Community Relationships and Partnerships, Air Canada. "Their courage deserves our deepest respect. Through "Honour the Fallen" and its feature on Air Canada flights, we ensure their legacy lives on, inspiring future generations to appreciate their noble service."

On September 24, 1998, the Government of Canada officially proclaimed the last Sunday of September as the annual Police and Peace Officers' National Memorial Day, to give "Canadians an opportunity to formally express appreciation for the dedication of police and peace officers, who make the ultimate, tragic sacrifice to keep communities safe."

The production thanks the families of the fallen, the Canadian Police Association, the National Police Federation, Air Canada, and many police associations and organizations across Canada for their support of this project.
