Public Safety Peace Officer


The Municipal District of Bonnyville No. 87 invites applications for the position of Public Safety Peace Officer. The successful candidate will report to the Public Safety Peace Officer Supervisor.
Duties & Responsibilities:
• Conduct highly visible patrols within the M.D. of Bonnyville to prevent and detect Municipal Bylaw and select Provincial Statute violations. Includes traffic patrol, commercial vehicle enforcement and rural crime prevention duties.
• Conduct investigations, collect and store evidence, obtain statements, and compile and present reports.
• Draft and complete various types of charging documents including bylaw tickets and Provincial Court documentation.
• Act on various situations such as traffic stops, complaint response, and interacting with the public to effectively articulate reasons for action taken.
• Accomplish checks of commercial vehicles, including gravel and oil haulers to ensure safe operation and compliance with commercial vehicle safety and overweight legislation.
• Conduct crime prevention patrols throughout the municipality to deter and detect crime. This may involve some extended working hours.
• Participate in the Vacant Home Check Program and assist the Crime Prevention Officer as needed.
• Perform various related tasks during a municipal emergency or disaster situation which may involve working extended or abnormal hours.
• Investigate complaint history and conduct routine clerical assignments.
• Respond to complaints from the public regarding Municipal Bylaws and Provincial Statutes.
• Ensure patrol bodycam and in-car video are appropriately tagged and downloaded.
• Operate in-car computer tablet to enter shift log entries, write reports, and conduct searches.
• Liaison with other local enforcement agencies.
• Hosting or attending public or industry meetings.
• Attending community functions and events as a representative of the department.
• Conduct traffic control for emergency situations, parades, funeral processions, and other activities as required.
• Maintain a high level of dress and deportment that will demonstrate a positive representation of the Public Safety department.
• Perform other related duties within the scope of the position as required.

Qualifications for Experienced Applicant:
• Grade 12 diploma or equivalent.
• A minimum of three (3) years as a Police Officer, Provincial Peace Officer, or Level 1 Community Peace Officer with traffic enforcement authority or equivalent.
• Valid Class 5 Alberta Operator’s License (Subject to a driver license abstract check).
• Valid First Aid/CPR certificate.
• Experience conducting and enforcing traffic and commercial truck laws including moving violations and truck axle overweight.
• Qualified in operating speed monitoring equipment and portable axle scales.
• Experience working with Alberta Provincial Statutes is considered an asset.
• ASP baton, OC spray training within last 3 years.
• Criminal record check/Enhanced Reliability screening conducted by the police of jurisdiction (proof required at time of interview).
• Qualification in Crime Prevention though Environmental Design (CPTED) would be considered an asset.
• Computer proficiency with MOVES, Microsoft Office, and MRF would be an asset.
• Ability to deal effectively with complaint investigation, conflict resolution, and perform duties with minimal supervision.
• Strong public relations, time management, and interpersonal communication skills are required.
• Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC) trained.

Physical Requirements:
• Physically demanding job tasks.
• Good hearing and eyesight are necessary to perform certain job requirements.
• PARE Police Physical Abilities test with a passing score of 4 minutes 45 seconds (during initial hiring process).
