Greetings!

As a fellow Albertan that is concerned about the mental health of first responders, we know you understand that first responders are critical to the protection of communities by saving lives, protecting resources, and maintaining order – often at risk to self. First responders can, at increasing frequency and severity to other members of the general public, be repeatedly exposed to traumatic experiences in stressful situations which can take a significant toll on their mental health and that of their families.

That's why a FREE, comprehensive, evidence-based mental health services program is now available to fire and rescue, paramedics, emergency health care workers and police services personnel working in rural, remote, and Indigenous communities in Alberta. Custom training is available at no cost for groups of eight or more first responders. The program can also be accessed by family members of first responders who have participated in the program.

The Rural First Responder Mental Health program <https://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001M5Z2P2Z ... Psychological injuries among first responders are at an all-time high

Data from WCB Alberta shows that over the past decade, the number of psychological injury claims for first responders has increased dramatically.

From 2015-2019, WCB recorded 685 claims for first responders related to post-traumatic stress injuries, totaling $104 million worth of treatment and compensation. The number of claims soared during the pandemic - in 2021 WCB accepted 565 claims for psychological injuries from first responders.

Free training and resources for rural first responders and families

AMHSA's free PTSI prevention program provides self-awareness training and customized resources to promote mental wellness, increase resilience, and reduce the stigma associated with mental illness. It provides a positive, supportive environment for first responders to access and participate.

Training is available to all rural Alberta first responders, including fire services, emergency health care workers, law enforcement, paramedical, and indigenous communities. This program is also the first of its kind to offer training and support to families of first responders.
