DEPARTMENT: Municipal Enforcement
REPORTS TO: Chief Administrative Officer (CAO)
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsible for the enforcement of all Town of Mayerthorpe Bylaws and all Provincial
Acts and Regulations (as per Appointment); and other related duties as directed by the CAO. Required to
maintain accurate work records.
Preserve and maintain the public peace.
Enforcement of the following specific Town Bylaws:
o Dog Control Bylaw
o Unsightly Premise Bylaw
o Property Maintenance Bylaw
o Animal Control Bylaw
o Traffic Bylaw
o Public Order Bylaw
o Off-highway Vehicle Bylaw
o Business License Bylaw
o Solid Waste Collection
Respond to complaints to all of the above Bylaws.
Respond to public inquiries and/or complaints in a positive manner, and further,
report all inquiries and/or complaints to the CAO in a timely manner.
Patrol the Town of Mayerthorpe and Summer Villages
Maintain good communication skills and public relations with ratepayers, fellow
staff members, Town Council and all other related third parties.
Be prepared to work an average of forty (40) hours weekly.
Investigate each complaint and take action that may include warning notices,
penalty tickets and swearing information for all above bylaws.
Gather and secure evidence to support any punitive action, which will include
comprehensive reports and where necessary, photographs.
Conduct follow-up investigations to ensure that the required complaint is properly
concluded.
Assist in preparing documentation for prosecutions.
Encourage compliance to all bylaws through educating the public to requirements
outlined within Town bylaws.
Assess improvements to the Bylaw Enforcement department and communicate
potential ways to improve Town Bylaws and enforcement of same.
Keep written records relating to complaint investigations.
Serve evidence in Court as required.
Perform related clerical duties that include recording complaints, filing, and
compiling statistics.
Prepare monthly and yearly activity reports.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Grade 12 Diploma supplemented by a two year diploma in law enforcement, criminal justice or related field. Equivalent combinations of education, training and experience may be considered
• Completion of the Alberta Solicitor General’s Public Security Peace Officer Training, training that occurred within the last 5 years is preferred
• Eligible to obtain appointment as a Community Peace Officer Level 1 and obtain a clear Criminal Record Check conducted by the RCMP
• Successful completion of a Driver’s Abstract
• Successful completion of an approved Physical requirements (PARE) test
• 1-2 years of related experience
• First Aid with CPR or ability to obtain
• Certification/training in OC Spray and ASP Baton
The following would be considered an asset:
• Experience in traffic enforcement (Radar and Laser) and familiarity with traffic related legislation
• Experience in a Municipal By-law Enforcement
• Defensive Driving (EVOC)
• Emergency Management (ICS 100, 200, 300, DEM)
